Outdoor Classroom
“There is no description, no image in any book that is capable of replacing the sight of real trees, and all of the life to be found around them in a real forest.”
A connection to the natural world has always been an important part of a Montessori education, and outdoor play is an essential part of early childhood education. Time spent in nature supports children's physical development, encourages creativity and problem-solving, strengthens social connections, and helps build confidence and resilience. Natural environments inspire curiosity in ways that cannot be replicated indoors, inviting children to ask questions, investigate their surroundings, and learn through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
At Winfield, the outdoors is more than just a playground - it is a classroom itself. Casa Natura encompasses dedicated outdoor space for both the Toddler House and Children’s House, along with a shared Back Woods, which is woodland full of worms and salamanders to find, uneven ground to navigate, and unstructured space for exploration and immersion in nature. In addition to the extensive dedicated space that makes up the Winfield campus, we are fortunate to be right across the street from the Falmouth Town Forest which is managed by the Falmouth Land Trust. With a dedicated Winfield access point to the trails, this resource expands the space our children are able to explore and enjoy!
Children spend dedicated time outside every day exploring, discovering, creating, and connecting with the natural world. Whether it's sunshine, rain, snow, or crisp autumn air, we believe every season offers valuable opportunities for learning. With the right gear and a sense of adventure, children learn that there is no such thing as bad weather!
Casa Natura is a place where children can learn to take appropriate risks, develop independence, and experience the joy of unstructured play, turning over logs, building with stones and other loose parts, or simply running, climbing, and imagining.
In addition, the Children’s House students participate in weekly sessions led by our full-time Outdoor Education Guide. Through thoughtfully planned lessons and seasonal explorations, the children develop practical outdoor skills, explore habitats, manage our gardens, and develop environmental awareness, all while building a lasting connection with the natural world.
We believe childhood is meant to be experienced outdoors. By making nature a part of each and every day, we help children develop healthy bodies, curious minds, resilient spirits, and a lifelong appreciation for the world around them!
