Why Winfield?
“Under the urge of nature and according to the laws of development, though not understood by the adult, the child is obliged to be serious about two fundamental things ... the first is the love of activity... The second fundamental thing is independence.”
Choosing an early learning program is one of the first and most important decisions parents make for their children. We know that families are faced with many different choices, so we are here as a resource as you are exploring your options. Our admin team are all credentialed Montessori teachers and Montessori parents ourselves, so our commitment to this approach is authentic and deep, and we love to talk Montessori. At Winfield, we offer an authentic Montessori education grounded in respect for the child. Montessori is a responsive philosophy. We don’t simply follow the latest trend in education; instead take our cue from Maria Montessori herself, who was a scientist and based her work on observation and a careful assessment of what she saw in the children in front of her. Similarly, we see each child as a unique individual, full of curiosity, capability, and potential. It is our job to observe, to see what each child reveals about themselves. By responding to their interests, strengths, and emerging skills, we tailor the classroom and our approach to what each needs. This responsive, child-led approach allows learning to unfold naturally, building confidence, independence, and a genuine sense of accomplishment.
This is one of the major benefits of the Montessori classroom - the time that is gifted to children to work through things, and to learn deeply and at their own pace. Too often, our modern world and educational systems are operating at a frenetic speed, focused on the quickly-derived and surface-level outcomes that give an impression of learning. Montessori makes a deliberate and different choice, focusing instead on the natural rhythms of the child, both day to day and across their developmental milestones. This is also why Montessori early childhood programs go through Kindergarten; developmentally, the transition to first grade at age 6 is a much more natural one than moving to desk-based education at age 5 at a time when children are completing their transition to the next plane of development.
The result is an educational philosophy which results in research-based improvements in lifelong outcomes for the children who experience it.
As an accredited Montessori school, we are committed to delivering a program that reflects those principles and practices, creating an environment where children are encouraged to learn at their own pace, follow their interests, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
What makes Winfield unique is the way we expand this Montessori foundation to include an additional focus on nature and art. Our outdoor education and art programs, each led by full time educators, are not extras; they are a natural extension of our philosophy that children learn best by doing, and that rich experiences in these areas pay dividends in learner outcomes.
At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief: every child deserves to be known, respected, and inspired. We are proud to provide a nurturing community where children are supported to grow into confident, compassionate, and capable learners, ready not only for school, but for life.
We celebrate the fact that we have had almost 1,000 families become a part of the Winfield community over the years, and hope that we can help you decide to join that community!
